OK, onto the bad stuff and trust me it’s pretty depressing.
Rosanne and I went out on Saturday night and had a lovely meal at our favourite Khmer restaurant when we got a text inviting us over to a friend’s place, so off we went.
We were there about an hour before we decided to head back into town for some fun and frollicks………………………which we certainly did not get!
We managed to get a tuk tuk despite being quite a way from town and just as we were getting in I spotted a woman carrying a baby. We jump in and as we’re heading off down the road I said to Rosanne that I thought there was something wrong with the baby and she said ‘do you want to go back?’
Where we had been picked up was opposite the main children’s hospital in town which has no emergency department and was closed for the weekend. We headed back as my thoughts were that maybe we could take the child to another hospital if it was sick.
When we got back to the woman I went up and checked the baby which was sadly dead. OMG, what to do now? All we could offer was to take them home, but this proved to be the most frustrating, exasperating, anger inducing experience I’ve had in a long time. Between the language barrier, the drivers trying to rip us off and the total lack of compassion shown I was about ready to punch someone. The family lived a long way away near the Thai border and the drivers who had gathered were trying to charge $250 to take them home. I know for a fact that I can get a taxi to the border for $30. I was incensed and was demanding that someone just take her for free…….she was holding a dead baby for god’s sake. In the end all I could think to do was give the lady $30 and hope that the drivers would be reasonable when the white faces left. Who knows what happened.
Can you imagine something this horrific happening in a ‘developed’ country? I can just see the headlines now.
Suffice it to say that we had a few beverages afterwards!
Told you it was depressing.
