First week over and boy am I glad. I am absolutely exhausted which I think is down to the heat, the work and the never ending energy of the kids, especially on Friday when they were so hyper active.
Quite an eventful week all in all.......I learnt to make an origami spider (photo later but pretty good even though I do say so myself), sung to the poor children, was attacked by one and had a split lip to contend with, as well as getting a blister from sharpening pencils.
I haven't braved the bike yet....full of good intentions but when I drag my sorry arse out of bed it's the last thing I feel like doing. The roads here are pretty poor and the driving is certainly interesting. They drive on the right but if you need to make a left turn you cross over to the left to turn and then cross back to the right. This means that if you are turning right there is head on traffic coming at you. The only saving grace is that everyone drives slowly and never gets cross. If someone gets in your way you just slow down and let them go, no tooting or gestures just calmness. Pedestrians appear to get right of way as well.
One little kid decided to pinch me and then tried to bite my hand....brave but stupid. Let's just say he won't be doing it again and now really tries hard in class and is the first one with his hand up every time.
Some of the kids have shaved heads and I find it really hard to tell their sex as their clothes are whatever they can get. The weird thing is that over here pyjamas are considered nice clothes, so it is kind of off putting when the kids are sat in class looking like they are ready for bed. Even the adults around town can be seen in mismatched pjs.
Thursday is pub quiz night and we came 2nd, which is better than we've ever done before so here's hoping to improve next week.
Dinner varies from the $1 stalls on the streets to maybe $5 in a nice place. The local currency is the Riel and 4000 Riel=$1. Tomorrow 7 of us have booked a Khmer cookery lesson, which should be a laugh and means that we won't have to worry about dinner.
This morning I ventured out and rather than sightseeing went on a quest for a decent cup of coffee....priorities. So far it has all been thick, black and like tar......revolting. I have found it and managed 3 cups of proper fresh coffee. I'll definitely be back there. I also got some very expensive Nescafe granules at the supermarket to keep me going on the early mornings.
Tonight there is a pub crawl and I shall see how I feel. Not sure my poor old knackered body is up to it, but we shall see.
