Sunday 26th August 2018 - Caravan in storage, overnight bag packed and we're driving on another red, sandy, partially sealed/unsealed corrugated road through WA's remote Dampier Peninsula on the way to the tip at Cape Leveque.
After a 2hr drive we stopped at Beagle Bay, an Aboriginal community and home to the Beagle Bay Sacred Heart Church. The church with its stark white exterior was built in 1917 and decorated inside with Mother of Pear, cowrie, volute and olive snail shells an art work not seen anywhere else in the world. Housed in the bell tower the smallest of three bells is the original from the first church built in 1837.
Our last stop is Kooljaman that on approach gave amazing views over the different coloured sands to the ocean. We settled into our cabin, changed into our swimmers and drove down to the beautiful sandy beach with the azure blue water shimmering in the sun.
We spent the afternoon snorkelling in the surprisingly warm ocean looking at the different types of marine life living amongst the rocks. We then sat and watched Humpback Whales breaching the water before making our way back to camp to watch a stunning sunset.
The sun as it settled down over the horizon gave the appearance of a staircase leading down to the beach. A the sun disappeared a couple of Whales made their way across the bay making the view a special one. Just amazing.
Monday 27th August 2018 - Well what did we do today?
We drove to Gunbanan another stunning location by the ocean with coloured limestone rocks merging with the azure blues of the water. Stood to watch the swirling clear water rise rapidly over the rocks as the tide came in.
Next stop Cygnet Bay that is famous for its pearl farm and pearls where we had a coffee overlooking the bay that was another lovely scene.
Back to Kooljaman to walked down to Western Beach famous for its red cliffs that merge with the stunning blue of the ocean. We walked along the beach dodging the waves still crashing against the undulating cliff face. The reds of the sandstone was absolutely amazing.
Spent the afternoon at the beach, more snorkelling where we followed a stingray with lovely blue spots on its back through the reef. When we later looked it up we found that it was a Blue Spotted Stingray and highly venomous Oops!
Again, we sat and watched Humpback Whales breaching the water as the tide continued to rapidly recede leaving the reef we had just swam in high & dry.
Tonight we witnessed a huge red and orange moon rise on the horizon and as it made its way up into the sky an optical illusion of a staircase reaching to the moon appeared. This natural phenomenon called the Staircase to the Moon only occurs when a full moon rises over exposed tidal flats at certain places - Wow!
Tuesday 28th August 2018 - This morning we walked along the shore dipping our toes in the warm Indian Ocean. Before we headed off to our next camp for the night we had a coffee overlooking the beach again watching the Whales and Dolphins playing in the lovely azure blue water. Kooljaman with its largely untouched beaches and clear blue ocean was certainly picturesque.
After making our way down a single red dirt track we arrived at Goombaragin (Meeting Place)that gave stunning coastal views of Pender Bay and the Pindan Red Cliffs where we were welcomed by the hosts Jan & John.
After settling in to our Nature Tent we took a drive across the top of the cliff that led down to the beach. The drive can only be described like driving across the moon. Ha! Ha! We parked near the glorious red cliffs and strolled along the beach looking ofr sea shells and taking in the wonder of the rock formations that rapidly appeared before us as the tide raced out to sea.
On our return to camp we then walked to the lookout where we sat for a while reading our books and taking in the stunning sea views.
Dinner, watched the sunset and spent the evening around the camp fire chatting to Jan & John and some other guests
After a lovely day we made our way back to our tent and noticed that the ground looked like it was sparkling with diamonds that turned out to be harmless Mirror Spiders. We also had a Green Tree Frog settle in for the night next to our tent.
We went to bed listening to the sounds of the waves along the shore & the frogs singing under the bright glow of the large moon.
Wednesday 29th August 2018 - We woke to the beautiful birdsong and the rising sun. Before we left to return to Broome we walked back to the lookout for a final look over the stunning beach of Goombaragin and the amazingly red cliffs illuminated by the morning sun. Stood & watched more Whales, turned & walked back to our vehicle saying goodbye to our hosts and left or Broome.
On arrival in Broome we took the caravan out of storage and drove to our campsite to prepare for out next adventure.
