Wednesday 7th November 2018 - What did we do today?
We packed up and headed to Denmark and on the way we stopped at The Valley of the Giants to visit the Tree Top walk and Ancient Tree walks.
We walked along the Sky Walk suspended 40m high within the canopies of the red and yellow tingle trees before we met with a park guide who took us on a to tour of the Ancient trees providing information about the old red tingle trees and the vegetation within the forest.
This is also a place where a trapdoor spider called the Tingle Spider lives it its survival depends on the moisture that the tingle trees provide and are proof that Australia was once part of the supercontinent known as Gonwanan.
After our guided tour of the beautiful red tingle trees we walked along the Sky Walk again with the canopies swaying gently in the breeze and as we were enjoying the views in the peace and quiet we spotted a Quokka sleeping at the base of a tall tingle tree.
Tingles trees are closely related to Eucalypts and are the tallest of three trees that grow up to 60m.
Our next stop was to enjoy a fish & chip lunch sitting on the beach at Peaceful Bay where we were surrounded sand dunes and where the Irwin inlet meets with the ocean.
After lunch we had intended to head for Denmark but as we were nearing the turning for Elephant Rocks we decided to make another stop as it was on the way. We parked and walked along the sandy path where we were greeted with another stunning and interesting sight of white sand and blue water.
As we turned a corner a group of large granite rocks that looked like a small herd of elephants drinking at the water's edge lay before us. As we continued to walk around to the small cove more rock resembling elephants with their heads and trunks under the water & facing each other emerged. We stood for a while taking in this amazing sight and to watch the tide roll in, pushing the clear water gently up the beach.
Aware that time was moving on, so did we. We didn't make another stop until we go to our campsite at the river mouth in Denmark, set up and settled in after an interesting day.
Thursday 8th November 2018 - Today was a lovely day to sit and do nothing and that exactly what we did. Actually that's not really true we spent the day carrying out some chores and took a drive to the local Boston Brewery so that Phil could try the beer and a ginger beer for me as I was the designated driver.
Friday 9th November 2018 - Warning!! What warning - We were shaken awake at 05:03am this morning by a 5.4 magnitude earthquake. The caravan rocked side to side with a sound that was like a road train driving past. We shot out of bed realising what had just happened looked at each other in astonishment and when the vibration stopped we went back to bed.
So after the early morning excitement what did we do today?
Ocean beach where we walked across a short bridge over a small inlet with green vegetation that opened out to a view of rolling waves and white sand that housed a fenced area where Hooded plovers were nesting and where other seabirds had also congregated.
McGredy's Rock a cove that was surrounded by Banksia, peppermint trees and grasses.
Lights Beach where the road to the carpark was blocked by a Blue-tongued skink who refused to move out of the way. We parked by the side of the road and with stick in hand it was encouraged to retreat to the safety of the bush. We were grateful that we hadn't picked it up as we were told by a few onlookers that skinks can latch on to you and then don't let go. (Skinks can live to 20 years old).
The beach was pristine with a side sandbar sitting between a rocky outcrop and the sand dune lined beach. We walked along the sandbar getting our feet wet by the waves lapping rolling up against both sides to climb up on to the rocky outcrop.
We walked bar across meeting a German couple on the way before we sat and had late lunch overlooking this wonderful scene. After a while we left and headed back to camp.
