Whalebone Bay - Carnarvon - Point Quobba
405 kms / 10 ½ hours
We woke up at 6:30am and were about to leave and spotted a pod of dolphins that swam into the bay feeding on fish. We watched them for about 10 mins and they got further away so we left at 7:10am. We stopped at the Hamelin Pool Stromatolites which is one of only a few places on earth where living marine stromatolites (the oldest living organisms on the planet) exist. These rocky looking lumps in the water are examples of the oldest and simplest forms of life on earth dating back 3.5 billion years. While I was looking at the stromatolites Roger was refuelling the car with the 20 litre jerry can. It was then time to depart Shark Bay Heritage area. We stopped at the Overlander Roadhouse again to refuel then drove to Carnarvon. Its another windy day but its actually a really pretty place. We did a big grocery shop at woollies then made lunches and ate them at the park along the Fascine (central waterway). The kids then played in the park for ages. We drove to the Heritage Precinct and visited One Mile Jetty. It was built in 1897 and is one of the longest jetties in the southern hemisphere. We decided it would be a long walk with the kids so we caught the coffee pot train instead. It was a fun little train ride and we spent about 10 mins at the end of the jetty watching lots of Vietnamese another other people fishing. They were constantly catching fish. Josh befriended a French man so enjoyed talking to him and watching him fish. We then got the train back. Before we left the are Roger had to change one of the tyres on the caravan as its worn through. The kids had fun playing on all the old train carriages etc. We then drove a further 70 kms to Point Quobba which is where we are staying tonight. Point Quobba is a pristine beach protected by a coral reef. The place is full of caravans and campervans and we were lucky enough to get the last spot. The lovely camp host found us a spot next to Billy who has been here since March. He is a real character and a wealth of knowledge. He has 2 small dogs so the kids have been enjoying throwing balls and watching the dogs fetch them (the dogs love it too!). We didn't arrive till 5:45pm so we missed taking photos of the beautiful bright red sunset as we were still waiting to be taken to our site. After we got set-up we reheated left over spaghetti and meat balls and ate dinner inside. We look forward to exploring the surrounds tomorrow.
Today we saw lots of animals on the side of the road and we even had to stop to let some cows cross the road! The animals included kangaroos, rabbit, goats, sheep, emu's, eagle, cows, fish & dolphins.
