After a very tranquil sleep we were up bright and early. We lazed around in our tent and then Rog and I took it in turns to go and enjoy a buffet breakfast at the restaurant. It was so peaceful without the kids sitting outside watching the birds fly around. We checked out at 8am and headed to Zebedee Springs again. There weren't many people there so first we hopped in where we did yesterday and then after Josh hassling us for ages we ventured right up the top and found two great waterholes to relax in. Josh also found some rocket frogs so he was in heaven trying to catch them. We could have stayed there all day but we had more to see.
Next stop was The Station and we had to go through our largest water crossing (across the Pentecost River). The kids love the water crossings. We saw cows, horses, donkeys. We then continued to the jetty on the Chamberlain River. There was no one there and it was so picturesque. In hind sight it looked like a beautiful place that we should have hired a boat for ½ a day to go exploring. On our drive to and from the Jetty we saw the exclusive Homestead. It looks beautiful but out of our league.
We then continued further down the Gibb River Road heading towards Home Valley and crossed the Pentecost River again. This crossing was longer than the Station and the car moved around a lot more. We went to a lookout overlooking El Questro and the Cockburn Ranges and then we turned around and drove back through the Pentecost River and out of El Questro.
Instead of heading straight back to Kununurra we decided to detour to Wyndham (top town of the west) as we were half way there. Not long after turning a ute overtook us and then Roger noticed a flame in the back of the ute. He was beeping, flashing his lights and speeding up trying to get them to pull over and they kept driving. Eventually as the flame got bigger they must have suddenly realised there was a fire and they pulled over. It was pretty funny seeing 4 guys jump out (one wearing a lycra onesis) of the ute and try to put the flame out with beer! We didn't stick around to see what caused the fire but we know that someones swag was what was up in flames. We later found out they were heading to the horse races in Wyndham along with everyone else. It felt like a Sunday as everything was closed due to the races. We stopped at the jetty (and watched some local aboriginals fishing), the port, five rivers lookout (which is where the King, Ord, Durack, Forrest & Pentecost flow into the Cambridge gulf), the crocodile statue, Parry Creek Nature Reserve/Marlgu Billabong (where we walked along the boardwalk and watched the birds and ducks in their natural environment. We saw a spoonbill, black-necked stork, eastern great egret, heron, Australasian darter, cormorant, brolga etc).
Roger got breathalysed as we left Wyndham (due to the horse races) and of course he was wishing he was drinking a beer but we still had 100kms back to Kununurra.
We arrived back to the caravan park at 5pm so we quickly unpacked the car and had Kangaroo steaks for dinner then took the kids for a walk to see the crocodile and frogmouth owls. There were lots of people at the bbq area so the kids had a great time chatting to everyone.
We had showers then the kids watched a movie.
