The kids had a lazy morning playing lego in the caravan and then we went for a swim in the pool and had an early lunch.
We then drove into Darwin city and did some touristy things. We went to the WWII Oil Storage Tunnels (which were constructed in 1943 to protect the navy's oil supplies from bombardment during WWII. The five steel-lined tunnels extend from the wharf and run under the city. Tunnel 5 is open to the public) and the kids had fun running through them.
We saw the wave lagoon (which I thought was a bit too rough for our kids) and the waterfront swimming area which we were tempted to have a swim at but decided we would continue sightseeing.
Drove past Parliament House and it's such a grand building then we arrived at the NT Museum. The Museum is a great place and the kids loved the displays we looked at including shells, animal displays, sweetheart a 5.1m saltwater croc (as they were trying to relocate him he died) and a cyclone tracy exhibit. There is even a re-creation room where you can feel and hear what it was like to be in the wind that devastated Darwin in 1974. Poor Bronte got scared so we had to leave the room quickly.
Next stop was Fannie Bay Gaol (it operated from 1883 until 1979 and was the major detention centre in Darwin for almost 100 years. The infirmary contains the gallows used for the last execution held in the Territory in 1952. They executed 2 men from Czech for killing a taxi driver). Of course Bronte had to check out the toilets in each cell. She is obsessed with toilets and everywhere we go she always has to go and check them out (I think her trip highlight will be the number of different toilets she has been able to use)
Our last stop was another free water park at Leanyer. It is bigger than Palmerston with 3 huge tunnel waterslides (one of them you sit on a tandem tube) and a kids water park including 3 slides, big tipping bucket, lots of water squirting things and a large shallow beach pool. Rog and I had fun on the big slides and the kids loved the little slides. We played at the park then headed back to the caravan for dinner.
Rog cooked a yummy BBQ bolognaise served with a chilled lambrusco and it felt like the old days.
