We were up early this morning so we could drive to the Adelaide River to see the Jumping Crocodiles. Josh has been waiting 7 weeks to see them and anytime we have mentioned we are going on a boat he always asks if we are in Darwin and going to the jumping crocs. After checking out the 3 different cruise companies we chose the local family run one called Adelaide River Cruises. They only use a small boat which means that you are closer to the crocs as the other two companies use 2 storey boats and lot's of people. We only had 3 other people on our cruise so it was very intimate.
The crocs preformed very well and it was great watching them jump for the buffalo (even though its not a natural thing for them to be jumping, it was still great entertainment!). One of them called Rocket jumped so far out. We were also lucky enough to see Brutus who is huge. He is 75 years old and is 5.5 metres long. He made international headlines in July 2011 as he lost his front leg due to a shark attack. He did a great act and we were so close to him, he even hit the boat with his head when he was landing from one of his jumps. There was only one scary croc which kept eyeing off Josh and it was so close to us that I was extremely cautious that Josh didn't go anywhere near the edge. At the end of the cruise they feed some buffalo to a whistling kite and it was great to see it catch the meat with its feet.
The cruise went for just over an hour and we returned to shore with all our limbs intact. On our way out we stopped at Fogg Dam which is a billabong and wetland area. We couldn't get out of the car as there is a saltie in the area (we didn't spot it but saw the trap that they have set-up trying to catch it so they can relocate it). We spotted the usual wetland birds and also spotted lots of the magpie geese.
Our next stop was the 'Window on the Wetlands' which overlooks the Adelaide River floodplains. It has fun interactive displays which help to explain the ecological processes that occur in the Top End wetlands. The kids had lots of fun with all the interactive displays and seeing some of the marine life.
On our way back to the caravan park we stopped at Woolworths to stock up on groceries and refuel the car. We had lunch back at the caravan and then the kids played lego and on the jumping pillow.
In the afternoon we took them to Palmerston Water Park which was lots of fun. They have three sections, one with a 6 lane waterslide which times everyone, an area with a big tipping bucket and a little kids area with a shallow pool, waterslide, jets, tunnels and musical fountains. The kids didn't want to leave. The place is free and open every day with life guards and we were surprised there weren't more people there. Josh was very cute and was so excited about going on the big waterslide. Rog and I were very shocked as Josh doesn't normally like waterslides (and this one really is huge) so I told Rog to quickly take him while he was excited. So Josh went bounding up the stairs all excited and got up the top and sat on his mat and then freaked out. So Rog went down the waterslide then had to walk back up to get Josh. Josh told us that he got scared cause he had to lay face down on the mat. We expected that he would be walking back down the stairs but we were impressed that he was willing to give it a go.
So Rog and I had a couple of turns on the waterslide and then we all had fun in the kids play area. We left to get home for dinner (which was just pies).
After dinner the caravan park had a Didgeridoo presentation. It was really interesting, we watched them make a didgeridoo and then play all different digeridoo's. Bronte was upset though as she was waiting for the singing and dancing but Josh had fun dancing around.
