We left our campsite Merl in Kakadu (near Ubirr) around 9:45am and stopped at Mamukala Wetlands to view the birdlife from the bird hide. There were lots of whistling ducks and some other wetland birds but not too many.
We then continued driving out of Kakadu and drove past a billabong which had about a 1000 pelicans (it was amazing to see so many) and stopped at Bark Hut to refuel. It was actually a really good place to stop as there was a live turtle in the gift shop and outside they had emus and a water buffalo. They also had a framed barramundi that was 28kg which the kids loved.
As we drove over the Mary River we saw a water police boat which was a bit sad as that is where the guy was taken from a croc on Saturday afternoon. I'm sure it was a very drunken mistake as the water is so muddy and full of crocs so not inviting at all.
We arrived at the Big 4 Howard Springs Holiday Park (near Darwin) around 1:45pm. We had lunch and then went and checked out their splash park, which the kids loved and their pool. It was so refreshing as its really hot in the Top End!
We cooked dinner at the camp kitchen so the kids could play on the jumping pillow while Rog cooked marinated kangaroo. We are all really enjoying kangaroo at the moment and Josh thinks that Rog keeps collecting dead ones from the side of the road.
