Today our intention was to visit the following locations: The Makers workshop / information centre, Rhododendron gardens, Hellyer's Road Distillery, peddle buggies and the Don River Railway. This didn't quite go according to plan.
We made it to the Makers Workshop and information centre. There we talked to the locals and found out they had an Alpaca farm and wildlife park. We decided that this would be the best start option for Saffron. The Makers Workshop showcased local artists and their wares, though only two were displaying today. The local cheese factory was being renovated, so their stall was at the workshop for a while, so we were able to sample some local cheese. We stocked up on pressies here as well.
Finished here we headed to the Alpaca farm. Two kilometers from the farm, Saffron chucked up everywhere. I mean everywhere. Everything was covered from her seat to clothes to floor to door. So a pull over to the side of the road and the clean up began. After a change of clothes and the best clean up we could do, Saffron felt good, so we decided to continue to the farm. (We think it was the cheese).
The farm was excellent. They had Alpacas (of course), ducks, geese, rabbits, pigs, alpacas, deer, emu, rainbow trout, various birds, alpacas, pheasants, peacocks, ferrets, guinea pigs, swans and alpacas. Suzanne had a friendly alpaca (Ali) to look after on a leash. They became soul mates by the end of the tour. Saffron wasn't that keen on some of the animals, but really liked the baby alpacas. The tour guide was really nice and made sure all the kids didn't miss out on feeding all the animals. Even some of us adults got a go. The tour took a good couple of hours so after Suzanne shed a tear on having to leave her soul mate, we had to head back to Burnie to buy Saffron some clean clothes and have lunch.
Due to the unexpected delay in clothes shopping and cleaning our girl, and the long farm tour, time was getting away from us. We decided to miss the gardens and peddle cars and head to the Hellyer's Road Distillery. This was a great little place, we tasted a few of their finest, bought some pressies and as it was near the end of the day, decided to head back to camp and wash everything in the car as the sick smell was starting to get to us.
All in all we had a good day, even though we didn't get to see all we wanted to see. We are moving base to Hobart tomorrow, so it is off to bed with us. First port of call in Hobart will be the local bottle shop as our carton of Boags red has mysteriously vanished.
