We stayed at Fitzroy Crossing for three nights and went for a cruise through the Geike Gorge, very pretty. The Photo Album tells the story. left here on Friday 21st
We are now on our way to Lake Argyle, approx 620 km away. We rang to make a booking but they only take ten bookings per day, the rest are metered out as people arrive. We have been there before and surprisingly this system works well. It is recommended to arrive before midday, so we need a strategy to arrive there nice and early. We will use three 24 hour rest areas to get to lake Argyle The plan is to spend Sunday night at a rest area called Cockburn which is 46km from Kununurra. We then need to leave early on Monday to get to the Coles supermarket which opens at 6.30am, get enough supplies for a week and then go Lake Argyle. To hopefully be allocated a site and book a tour. We plan to stay at least five days .
Friday 21st Mary Pool is a 24 hour rest area that tempts some to overstay their 24 hours because of the beauty and tranquility. There is a river running quietly by and if you are early enough you get to camp up higher and look down at the running water. We arrived here at 10am this morning after leaving Fitzroy Crossing at 7.30am. We knew this was a popular spot so made the extra effort to get here early and that paid off as we have a great spot. Trees close at hand for shade and a view of the river. A man is playing a guitar from under his awning in one of the many caravans parked here already. It's a very special atmosphere. This place has such a large area that there is room for all, but not all places have trees for shade and views of the Mary River. It is 12.40pm right now and we expect many more vans to pull in before nightfall. Till then, we will have some lunch and then sit back and relax.
We went for a walk and counted at least 60 campers, including caravans, campervans and tents and there's time for more to arrive and still it's very quiet.
Saturday 22nd We left the Mary River and headed towards the next rest area called Spring Creek, which was quite small, but we were early and got a nice shaded spot. We had been assured that it was a pretty spot, but to be honest it wasn't as nice as Mary Pool, but it was peaceful, until a truck went over the bridge which was close by.
Sunday 23rd July We have now arrived at Cockburn Rest Area and Ross is getting the satellite dish up and running for the footy this afternoon. It is 29c with a gentle breeze blowing, which is just as well as there is not much shade here.
Next entry Kununurra and lake Argyle.
