Stayed the night at the Overnight camp in the Memorial Gardens at Meckering. A very welcome, quiet spot on a very windy day. Meckering is the town which in October1968 had a 6.9 earthquake which destroyed the town. We went for a walk through what was once the old town site with signs where once the shops and businesses stood. The site of the old town has not been built on as yet. The is memorial garden of roses, is where they allow travellers with their own accomodationto to spend the night and hopefully those travellers will spend some money in the area also. It has in it a shrine to remember fallen soldiers of the shire, as well as a rotunda describing the earthquake and pictures of the devastation that followed. It is hard to imagine what it must have been like for the inhabitants as in 30 seconds their town, their livlihoods and their homes were completely destroyed. According to one of the posters decribing the earthquake one of the patrons of the hotel ran outside while the pub was shaking, rattling and falling to the ground he was heard to say with his hands on his hips. "Well I've never seen that happen before!"
