Hello Everyone
We are at Lake Argyle which has very limited WiFi. We will be out of contact till next week.
We have Internet finally so can update the blog
Friday 21st Mary Pool is a 24 hour rest area that tempts some to overstay their 24 hours because of the beauty and tranquility. There is a river running quietly by and if you are early enough you get to camp up higher and look down at the running water. We arrived here at 10am this morning after leaving Fitzroy Crossing at 7.30am. We knew this was a popular spot so made the extra effort to get here early and that paid off as we have a great spot. Trees close at hand for shade and a view of the river. A man is playing a guitar from under his awning in one of the many caravans parked here already. It's a very special atmosphere. This place has such a large area that there is room for all, but not all places have trees for shade and views of the Mary River. It is 12.40pm right now and we expect many more vans to pull in before nightfall. Till then, we will have some lunch and then sit back and relax.
We went for a walk and counted at least 60 campers, including caravans, campervans and tents and there's time for more to arrive and still it's very quiet.
Saturday 22nd July
We left the Mary River rest area, known as Mary Pool and headed towards the next rest area called Spring Creek, which was quite small, but we were early and got a nice shaded spot. We had been assured that it was a pretty spot, but to be honest it wasn't as nice as Mary Pool, but it was peaceful, until trucks passed over the bridge which was close by.
Sunday 23rd July
We have now arrived at Cockburn Rest Area and Ross is trying to get the satellite dish up and running for the footy this afternoon. It is 29c with a gentle breeze blowing, which is just as well as there is not much shade here.
We are now planning our trip to Lake Argyle. We rang to make a booking but they only take ten bookings per day, the rest are metered out as people arrive. We have been there before and surprisingly this system works well. It is recommended to arrive before midday, so we have developed a strategy to arrive there nice and early. Firstly though we need to stop in Kununurra which is 46km from Cockburn in order to get some supplies, enough for a week, from the Coles supermarket which opens at 6.30, after that we intend to get to Lake argyle, 70km, by 8.30am, to be allocated a site and book a tour. We plan to stay at least five days.
Monday 24th July
Mission accomplished!! We got here nice and early and we are all set up on our site for seven days which is a special offer they have at the moment.
Wednesday we went on the lunch boat cruise which was great, so we took plenty of photos. Check out the albums.
The journey to reach Lake Argyle has been through some of the most magnificent landscapes one could ever hope to see. At times all you could hear in the car was Wow!! Magnificent! Have you ever seen anything so beautiful! Fantastic! How lucky are we to have such a wonderful country to travel in?
We will leave here on Monday 31st to continue our journey across the top of Australia on our way to Charters Towers which is about 100km from Townsville. Then we will probably start heading south to drop in for a visit to Ross' brother and continue slowly south, homeward bound, but we will be watching temps very carefully, before we make that decision.
