Off from Alamosa after Larry’s favorite breakfast so far! Next stop Cave of the Winds Mountain Park.
Alamosa is located on the Rio Grande River, which apparently is formed near here. Who knew? After leaving, made our way out through the prairie again, and met up with our old friends from Wyoming, the pronghorn antelope!
Began returning to the mountains, and drove up to the Cave of the winds. Such spectacular views of the mountains on the way and at the top at the visitor center.
Arrive early for our tour, so had time to sit on the porch soaking in the landscape while sipping on a Pikes Peak larger, and eating soft pretzels. Fantastic!
Soon it was time for our tour of the cave. Anna was our guide, and boy was she filled with enthusiasm and great stories. These caves were discovered by two boys but was known by the Native Americans who thought the spirit of the wind inhabited here.
Such a beautiful cave, with its many rooms but few stalagmites or stalactites, as the cave is pretty dry. Up and down several steps, and through some narrow and low tunnels comprised the tour. All the while, Anna made it fun and interesting.
Finish the tour, and decide to pan for some gems and fossils. Had fun locating both in our collection, and even got one large one. But it was time to be off to our place for the night, the Cliff House at Pikes Peak.
This historic hotel is located in Manitou Springs, and is not located on a cliff, but does have a view of Pikes Peak.
We were upgraded to a suite, so after enjoying some of amenities of our suite, it was off to explore Manitou.
Manitou Springs does have about 6 or 8 natural springs in the town, all with drinkable water, and all taste different, depending on its mineral content. It also is sometimes referred to a hippie Mayberry.
I must say is an interesting town, with its many shops, restaurants, and proximity to the Incline. People seem to move here, and never want to leave!
Oh, forgot to mention it has the biggest arcade with rides and games I have ever seen. Just wild!
Decided to return to our lovely hotel, as the evening chill was starting to set in. Went to the Red Mountain pub in the hotel, and had delicious old fashioneds by the fire, salad, and A Yak burger for Larry.
Off to our room to crash, tomorrow brings Garden of the Gods, and the drive to Denver.
