Off to another early morning as we are riding the 8:15 train from Durango to Silverton. Fortunately the train station is only a few minutes walk from here, but we needed to board at 7:45.
Got to the station early, checked out the gift shop and then boarded our car Knight Sky, which has large glass windows and ceiling for optimal viewing.
Got settled in and our guide/server took our drink order. We proceeded out of the station promptly at 8:15 for the 31/2 ride to Silverton. In the stagecoach days, this would have been a three day journey!
Louise, our guide, was busy with two cars, but did share important sites and stories in our journey. This steam engine train followed the rails, which fit through some very tight spots in places. We could have reached out and touched rocks, or trees In many places areas.
And the views, let’s just say the topography was breathtaking! Gorgeous fall colors, deep river gorges, riding on both the edge of the gorge, and right by the river, the train continued up and over the mountains. Just spectacular scenery at every point on both sides of the train.
Stopped a few times at water stations for the engine, and even once for a fallen tree on the tracks! We finally made it to Silverton, a former mining town which is now a home to a little over 200 permanent residents, as the road that leads in tends to become impassable from both ends.
This old western town, with only one paved highway, is a wonderful little spot. Filled with cute restaurants, shops, a few hotels, and even a brewery, it caters to the railroad tourist. It’s situated in a beautiful little valley surrounded by mountain peaks.
After a quick lunch and some exploring and shopping, it was time to return to the train for the journey to Durango. The ride back was every bit as enjoyable and spectacular !
Arrived in Durango, a quick stop at the Cow Girl shop, and onto the local winery. We enjoyed talking to the owner and his wife who make their wine from purchased grapes is the back of their lovely shop.
Then it was off to the Boardroom for drinks and dinner, and good guitar playing singer. Moved next door to the Diamond Belle where a fantastic foursome was playing and singing. Loved the music this weekend!
Would love to spend more time in Durango, but it’s off to bed as tomorrow brings the drive to Great Sand Dunes National Park.
