Adam and I have just booked our tour around New Zealand! (You have to read all of this tour)...!
Christchurch to Westport - We depart Christchurch early and cruise accross the Canterbury Plains and start climbing the foothills of the Southern Alps and onto the main road of the coast. We travel through the Lewis Pass, where you are surrounded by snowcapped mountains (!) and you will even get a chance to meet the cheeky locals ''Kea'', which are mountian parrots native to New Zealand.
Westport to Lake Mahinapua - Today we head down the spectacular west coast road that stretches along the rugged Tasman shoreline. The road winds through diverse landscapes, which never cease to amaze locals and visitors alike. Highlights include Cape Foulwind seal colony, rugged beach walks and Punakaiki Pancakes and Blowholes.
Lake Mahinapua to Franz Josef - Our first stop this morning in the Bushmans Centre, where you will get an insight of how people make a living on the coast with sphagnum moss-growing, old timber milling techniques, possum trapping and helicopter deer recovery. We then head through the Franz Josef Glacier Township, nestled in the Westland National Park.
A full day at Franz Josef - Today is your chance to hike Franz Josef Glacier, rated in the top three New Zealand activities!
Franz Josef to Wanaka - We start out early in order to catch the perfect mirror reflection of Mt Cook and the Southern Alps on Lake Matheson near the village of Fox Glacier. We then cruise down the last stretch of the west coast road, stopping at scenic photo spots on the way. Then we head into Mount Aspiring National Park and arrive in an awe-inspiring destination of Wanaka in the afternoon.
Wanaka to Queenstown - A short but action packed drive to New Zealand's adventure capital, Queenstown. A night out in Queenstown to finish off the trip!
A day in Queenstown - Skydive, Bungy Jump, bush walks or a day trip to Milford Sound; commonly referred to as New Zealand's most beautiful spot.
Queenstown to Christchurch - We head up out of Queenstown, into the Mackenzie Country, names after James Mackenzie - the notorious sheep rustler. We travel through to the amazing aqua blue lake Pukaki to see Mt Cook and Lake Tekapo for a view of the Church and the Good Shepherd, the bronze sheepdog and the milky blue colour of the glacier fed lakes.
I am so excited now - how amazing does this tour sound!? I have posted a map of our route in my photo albums. I have just booked a flight from Sydney to Melbourne on the 11th October, to visit Nino and Grace. I will spend two or three weeks in Melbourne before coming back to Sydney.
