Day 6
We arose and went to breakfast before being collected by the tour company for our Kayaking trip. Ended up going with Chang Andaman Krabi whose brochure says "Let's Kayaking, explore a new experience"! Perhaps proof reading the brochure before printing might have been a good idea! Which reminds me, at breakfast there is an item on the buffet with the breads and condiments called 'Denis' After gingerly trying one, I realised that it should read 'Danish' a sort of pastry scroll with raspberry or similar at its centre. Unfortunately, in the high humidity of the tropics, pastry tends to have a slightly soggy texture and I think I might have had my last 'Denis'
It took about an hour or so to be driven to the departure point for the Kayaking and we were in a comfortable mini bus, this one with fully functioning seat belts. I was also mindful of the fact that we were heading into an area that had been marked in red, when I visited the travel doctor for my Typhoid shots, as a Malaria risk. I applied some extra D.E.E.T!
There were squat toilets at the departure point which was a roofed platform above the river so I was conscious of what we were sharing the river with! The kayaks were tandem and we were given a 'dry bag' to put our valuables in. As we were travelling 'carry on 7kg' we were using our phones as cameras and so these went into the bag too. We were luckier than one poor Taiwanese girl who dropped hers in the river and then looked very sad for the rest of the trip. There were 5 kayaks plus our guide making 6. Unfortunately there was one Indian couple who had never kayaked before and they spent the first 10 mins splashing around and generally going around in circles. We felt sorry for them and after an hour or so they gave up and headed back. The rest of us did well and we paddled through the mangroves and into 2 caves which was great. We also stopped at a third cave, which was above the river and looked at some cave art. The tide was dropping on the way back and we had to paddle against the current to get back for lunch which was lovely. We were then taken to a nice waterhole with fast flowing fresh water for a nice cool off before getting back to the resort. Interestingly, the only difference between the half day trip and the full day trip was this waterhole! The driver took the half day'ers back to their accommodation then came back to collect us! Dinner overlooking the beach again which was interrupted by a sudden thunderstorm.
