Barden's Great Aussie Adventure 2015
It was a slow drive out at about 10 km/h until we hit the main road. We were able to average about 30-40km/h after this making the trip a bit more bearable. To avoid taking the broken trailer on any more rough roads then need be, we chose a free camp on Gibb River Road rather than the planned Windjana Gorge. Kenan and Clare went back to Bell Gorge for another swim before catching us on the road with impeccable timing..... (Leaving after us and catching us literally as we were turning off the Gibb River Road into camp 4 hours later). We left the camper at camp and spent the afternoon going to Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek. Even if the camper wasn't broken we wouldn’t want to take it down this road. The road to tunnel creek was debatably worse then the bungle bungles with long stretches of big corrugations.. As you can tell by the floaty on Matt's back we thought there would be swimming at Windjana Gorge....until we saw the crocs. There were 30-50 freshwater crocodiles all in a small area. It was amazing to see, even some small baby crocs. They were the highlight of the gorge.
Next was tunnel creek which I was looking forward to. With our lights and water shoes ready we entered the dark 600m long tunnel. It was really dark inside with most water crossings shallow, the deepest about knee height. Matt hated the drive in but he even said that this was worth it. There were a few bats inside, stalactites and a break in the tunnel half way through.
We stopped by the Lillimilura Police Station Ruins. At this site in 1894 an Aboriginal Tracker known as Pigeon killed the police officer, set his people free and then was on the run for the next 3 years before he was caught and killed.
