The sunset was a con, it rained most of the night and this morning is still heavy rain so for the second morning we abandon our plan, which was to have been to check in to the city centre campsite at Chartres and visit that famous old city. We decide instead just to drive north for a while into the Perche region and take it from there.
The service point is €2 with loads of water then we set off. Unlike yesterday we are on lesser travelled routes so fewer lorries and less spray. Some of it would no doubt be pretty in better weather, vast rolling plains with remote farmsteads, but even in today’s gloom the grass is rich green.
We head off onto switchback byways through thick woodland which brings us to the little village of St Germain de la Coudre which has a small aire next to a stream and park. These village aires are great; only a few pitches so never crowded, generally peaceful apart from the odd church bell or two and almost always free.
By now the rain has diminished to occasional showers and sunny spells. We sit and read and just take it easy through the afternoon while a few dog walkers stroll past and a group of children play hide and seek in the park.
In the evening we play some music and have breaded sole for supper.
