Renee & Eamon had a good clamber around the Pebbles this morning, while we packed up. It was a short 100km's to Tennant Creek, so no rush today. The only thing between the two places was quite a few deceased cows by the roadside.
We arrived at Tennant Creek and did a couple of laps of the town. Actually, we were looking for a place to have brunch - we found the Top of the Town Cafe, which was manned by a couple of Asian people - the food was great and so was the coffee - it was very out of place compared to the rest of the town which was quite rundown and most places appeared to be closed.
Anyway, we decided to stay at the Outback Caravan Park, so set up there, and then went off to the Old Telegraph Station about 11km north of town. We had a key which let us into the cellar, kitchen/lounge, and the telegraph buildings. The whole experience was quite amazing and made us think about how life would have been around 1872 for the people who were 'repeating' the Morse Code telegraph messages between Darwin and Adelaide. Camel trains came from Port Augusta (near Adelaide) only every 6 months with staple supplies - the sheep and cattle on the land were slaughtered weekly to feed the staff manning the telegraph station.
We then went to the Lake Mary Ann, which is a man-made dam 5km north of Tennant Creek. The water was quite muddy and very rocky underfoot, but there was a lot of wildlife about including pelicans and ducks. It was a nice place for a picnic. The Ted Ryko cycleway goes from the dam to town, and it was 34 degrees at 4pm: Dad & Eamon didn't fancy a bike ride, so Mum & Renee took off towards town and enjoyed a nice ~3.5km run towards town.
Quick ride back to the caravan park, and Renee & Eamon cooled off in the pool, while Mum & Dad enjoyed a couple of beers at the bar. Another great day, with an early start tomorrow where we head to Daly Waters' Pub.
