Having fallen asleep so early we were awake by 5 O'Clock but had a good night's sleep. The hotel has a pool and hot tub on the top floor, so an early morning swim to start the day. We walked over to city hall a large impressive building where Graham registered and picked up his race pack,we thought it might be like Excel where you picked up your London marathon pack, but there was nothing apart from desks of volunteers waiting for some customers. No stalls to buy last minute tri gear or bikes if they didn't arrive, there was nothing.
We then wandered along to the Westin Hotel where the Brownlees are staying and checked out the team notice board . We didn't spot them having their breakfast.
There was group cycle ride to the course which left from our hotel , so I decided to go for a run in the same direction. The cyclists seemed to keep getting lost so I was surprised to find that I was ahead of them when we crossed the river. The cyclists continued to get lost when trying to check out the course! The transition area by the lake is vast, with row after row of racking for the bikes, not sure how you find your bike!
The city is built above the river so the riverside is not really part of the city which is a shame but a track along the river leads to the Triathlon venue, which is about 3 miles from where we are staying. The one good thing about cities with numbered grids is that as long as you can count, you can always find your way back to your hotel. Although when I stopped to check my location a young New Zealand athlete asked if I was lost, of course everyone assumes you are an international athlete when you are out jogging in a triathlon T shirt, so I can just pretend!
We decided to go and see the infamous West Edmonton Shopping Mall as the afternoon was free. Lonely Planet said it was the next best thing to Vegas and you know how we love Vegas!
The bus ride was quite interesting and working out the bus map was a bit challenging, but we made it to the Mall which was nothing like the strip, but is the biggest Mall in North America.
It did have the most amazing water park with so many chutes! and a theme park with so many rides in the smallest area possible. There were sea lions, and crazy golf, and yes there were shops which were pretty boring!
After a bit of a detour as we leapt on the bus going in the wrong direction we arrived back to our Hotel . We found a nice pub/ bar for a meal near Westin Hotel and while we were setting out side we spotted the Brownlees coming out of the restaurant opposite. No I didn't leap across the road to get their autographs because a message has gone round that they have been hassled too much!
