Penzance to Eden Project, near St Austell
Distance 51 miles
The YHA was seemingly full of French cyclists who also had breakfast at 0730. Still made us feel young as against the previous day when we were by far the oldies.
Got some lunch in Tesco, no Waitrose around here, then an easy cycle round the bay past St Michael's Mount. However once away from the coast the route became "Undulating". Around every bend seemed to be a steep hill so we learnt to change gear well beforehand.
There were some other LeJoG cyclists about. The lightweight cyclists on road bikes and support flew past, whilst another group also laden were going to take 20 days as against our 14.
The King Harry was still the same and provided a short break before yet another challenging hill up from the river.
A couple of sections and in particular the A390 Round St Austell were busy with cars and hilly.
Tonight we are staying in a container at the YHA Eden Project - different!
The book says that the first 2 days are hard and tomorrow looks like today was easy.
LeJoG Blog June 2nd: Day 1Very hard 50 miles as there is no need for the word "flat" in the Cornish language. The terrain soon settles into a rhythm, long slog uphill, corner, more uphill, brow of the hill, rapid downhill, over a bridge, long slog uphill, repeat about 20 times.
It's a World of Silly Names: Treb******, Mevagisseywinkle, Carmahuckwangle, Frogpool, Grumbla, Bar Ripper, the list goes on.Who actually thinks of these names?!Traffic a nightmare as it's half term, so the quiet country lanes are all Ratruns and a bit dodgy. Already fed up with slogging up a hill slower than a slug, with some old biddy in a 20 year old Ford Fiesta sitting right up behind you!Rolled into the YHA Eden Project (we are sleeping in a container, yes really....still the budget rooms are skips) at 3 pm, but can't get a shower and our "room" until 4pm.Still, it's a lovely day so we are sitting in the sun, recharging our batteries ready for another tough day tomorrow.SH
