Day 23! Today we had our swamp and plantation tour. We went for breakfast first at the French Marketplace and had a proper southern breakfast - crispy bacon, eggs 'sunny side up', hash browns and a biscuit. It was so good but so much food! First off was the swamp tour, which was so cool! The tour guide had a proper Cajun accent, which I loved. He knew all about the bayous because he'd grown up on them so he was full of useful information. We saw crazy huge grasshoppers and dragonflies, raccoons, birds, and of course gators! We saw loads of gators, ranging from about 2ft-7ft long. And the guy had a baby gator on board that we got to hold, and he was actually pretty cute! A lot softer than I expected him to be too. When we finished our swamp tour we headed to Oak Alley plantation, which was a beautiful sugar cane plantation on the banks of the Mississippi River. We got a tour of the great house and then got to explore the grounds on our own, and there was loads of info on the history of the place and slaves etc. When we got back to the city we went for a drink on Bourbon Street and then dinner back at the same place we had breakfast! I had a muffelletta which is another New Orleans tradition - it's like a huge circular sandwich filled with meats and cheese and an olive salsa type thing. I ordered a half sandwich and could still only eat half of that. We stopped for one last drink in a jazz bar on Frenchmen Street, then picked up our bags from the apartment and headed for yet another overnight bus. It was supposed to leave at 10.30 and it's currently 10.45 with no sign of any bus... Could be another interesting night.. L x
