We traveled through the night and arrived bright and night in Mexico City. We had some directions from our Couchsurfing Host but after about 20 minutes of getting lost we realized that he had given us directions from a different bus station to the one we were dropped off at. We searched for someone who spoke a bit of English to help us. Fortunately we found someone and, after 2 hours of wandering around and braving the metro in the morning rush, we arrived at our Host's apartment.
We met some people at the entrance of the block and asked them if they knew which number this guy stayed at. They recognized his name and then laughed - "More Couchsurfers? You're Number 9 and 10," they said. They wandered off... and we wondered what we had got ourselves into. We knocked on the apartment door and were greeting by some fellow travelers. We were informed that our host was at work and would only be getting home at 20:00. After chatting for a few minutes we found out that this guy had just kept saying yes to more and more people. Not enough space or beds but people didn't seem to mind, they were just happy to have a free place to stay. Three bothers had cycled from Seattle but had run out of money. When they told us that they had been practicing some songs on their guitar and were going to busk in the Metro we decided that this was NOT the vibe we wanted for our days in Mexico City.
We left to go buy some food.... and come up with a plan! Exhausted we sat on a curb eating chicken nuggets from a supermarket (we weren't brave enough to eatstreet food just yet) and decided as much as we would have loved to stay with a local and learn about the city, our host was probably not the right guy for us. We returned to his apartment to looked online for another place to stay.
Usually with accommodation I research as much as I can before making a booking. Time was not a commodity we were in possession of that day! Kevin and I agreed to spend a bit more than we usually do, and I took a quick look at options online... anything to get as far from this strange Couchsurfing Commune as quick as possible!
We found another place to stay and wrote our Host a note thanking him for offering to have us stay. We explained that we felt there were just too many people and as we were the last to arrive, we would go. We then grabbed our bags and told everyone that we were going to find a hostel. We were just given blank looks and then complete surprise that we were actually going to pay for a place to stay. As we dashed down the road we KNEW we made the right decision.
Our rushed researched rewarded with was this beautiful old home with a courtyard, an avery of birds, free breakfast and just a complete sense of calm - a haven in this manic city.
While we were in the reception area checking in, an Australian guy walked in and enquired about tickets to Lucha Libre - the Mexican wrestling. We had heard this was a must-see so we jumped on board and bought some tickets for that evening.
We got to our room, showered and fell asleep. We woke up feeling so much better and decided to go find some food. Two minutes of walking from our accommodation the heavens opened. The umbrella sellers sprung out of nowhere so we bought some cheap shelter and carried on walking. Another minute along and we hit a row of street stalls with locals perched on plastic chairs. Yip, this was us! A bit of pointing at a few items and the most delicious food arrived in front of us. Posada are big here - it's pork meat that is cooked in a similar way to Turkish meat on a vertical rotisserie. With Posadas the meat is sliced off and then placed on a flat hot grill to crisp up. It is then heaped onto whatever version of tacos you are eating (we have learnt that there are lots!)
Whatever we pointed to landed up being two soft tacos piled high with meat, diced pineapple and onion. Salsas and lime slices were on the table for us to add ourselves. The freshness of the food here, together with the powerful flavours of lime, coriander and salsas make everything taste incredible. As a foodie, this country has blown me away. I eat with a smile on my face and try put the memory of the experience someone deep down. Yum, yum, yum!
With full bellies we wandered around the Historical District for a bit and then we stopped at a cute place with a balcony overlooking the street - perfect spot for people watching.
We returned to our accommodation and then met up with group going to the wrestling. It was a great night out but does need a whole post on it's own! :)
Our first day in Mexico City, after getting off to a super rough start, turned out great. We couldn't wait to explore more of this city and see what it had to offer!
