We just got back from our evening out watching the Mariachi Bands. They gather around Plaza Garibaldi, all dressed up and ready to go, waiting for someone either pay them to perform a song right then and there, or to hire them last minute for a party or special event. For us it was quite fascinating to see so many groups in one place playing songs but, actually, it was a bit sad seeing so many groups just waiting around. There is no way they would all be hired that night.
We watched some perform for customers in the restaurant we were having a drink in. After our dinner we walked back to the bus stop and saw some of the groups leaning against closed shop doors, just waiting, and others - get out the tissues - sort of leaning into the road like hitchhikers, trying to get drivers to stop. Nothing quite as sad as a middle aged man in tight white pants clutching his harp at 23:00 on a Friday night.
We found a Churreria on the way home and bought some Mexican hot chocolate, freshly made churros and Nutella dip - a great last snack to end off our wonderful time in Mexico City!
I've been trying to work out what I have been feeling in this city as it has really taken me by surprise. I was feeling quite nervous about visiting it as it is so huge and I thought it would be too much for me to handle. Instead what I have experienced is a beautiful, pulsing city which is full of life! The frantic pace sweeps you up, but doesn't overwhelm you. You sort of get absorbed into the city... a little room is made for you - like there is always room for one more. You're welcome to pull up a chair and eat with the locals, ride the metro, wander in the parks - all without being stared at or taken advantage of. In buying things, the price is the price (a welcome change from India and S.E Asia!) I've felt very accepted here - and far from being overwhelmed which I was expecting.
Mexico City is a wonderful city. One we have hardly scraped the surface of, but one we will return to.
