Lucha libre is a form of professional "freestyle wrestling" that has developed in Mexico. The fighters all wear colourful masks and run around performing different holds and maneuvers as well as jumping off the sides of the ring - either into or out of the ring... It depends where their competitor is.
The moves look quite slow and staged at times so it's hilarious to watch and you find yourself saying "C'mon.... really?" quite a lot. Other times they look like they give it a go or do crazy acrobatic moves off the sides of the ring that are quite impressive. The stadium is filled with flashing lights, people are shouting and singing, you can buy cheap nachos, expensive beer and the masks of the different fighters.
The fights we watched had 3 people on each team that sort of tag in at different times. Well, that is what they seem to do. Other times there is 1v3 and the other two just sit around watching. You just pick a team, or a certain fighter, and just shout like crazy for him.
The fighter's costumes are the best (think spandex, capes and lots of baby oil) and that together with their crazy masks just make the whole thing quite unbelievable. We saw the likes of Mistico, Red Dragon and Starman. After shouting our lungs out, one of the teams crowned the champions and we headed home exhausted. If you ever find yourself in Mexico City and are looking for a fun night out, go check this out... it is a quintessential Mexican experience!
