After breakfast we decided to go visit some markets around the city. We hopped onto the metro and made our way to a different part of the city. The metro is really great - it is clean, fast, really extensive and at 6 pesos (R5) a journey, it's a cheap way to get around.
We found a great Artistian a market that had a huge variety of beautiful Mexican handcrafts. I chose two small bowls with lovely painted designs - perfect for salsa and gauc when we host our next Mexican party!
We then made our way to La Merced, the largest retail traditional market in the city, and let me just say - this place blew our minds!!! It was in a huge building with many different areas: industrial kitchen equipment, clothes, shoes, flowers, meat, seafood, fruit and veg, anything and everything you'd need to throw a party... and more. It is a gigantic maze so there is no way of knowing where you are! We wandered through the different sections. The most beautiful was the fruit and veg. Avos, tomatoes, onions, peppers, chilies, cactus pads... oranges, mangoes, strawberries, dragon fruit, and limes - all pilled high. Minimum order? 1kg. Chefs from around the city come here to buy the freshest produce. When I saw the price of limes per kg I finally understood why they are able to offer free lime wedges everywhere: Limes are 9 pesos per kg (R7/ $0.60) Back in South Africa I have paid R12/ $1 for ONE lime. Crazy, hey? The volume of food was mindblowing. We walked around for hours, deeper and deepr into the market and getting more and more lost. Our senses were asulted at every turn but it was an amazing experience!
After asking numerous people how to make our way out of the maze of the market, we made our way back to the metro. After all that craziness we needed some calm so we headed to Bosque de Chapultepec, the largest park in Mexico City. We got some food and went and sat by a lake. The park was so quiet inside - a stark contrast to the business of the city. We then wandered around, took a few photos and made our way home.
That evening we grabbed some tacos from a place close to our accomodation and wondered around the Historical District a bit. It was a hectic day but such a great one and certainly one we wont forget in a hurry!
