We woke up early, packed up our things and checked out of our room - we were ready to head to our next stop. San Cristóbal de las Casas is a town located in the Central Highlands region of the Mexican state of Chiapas. The city sits in a small valley surrounded by hills. To get there you must travel 5 hours on winding roads. I have learnt my lesson about bus journeys on winding roads, well two lessons really - one, take anti nausea tablets and two, if you do puke, puke in the toilet and not the basin. I say no more!
We boarded the bus, I took a second tablet for good measure, prayed, put my earbuds in and listened to some chilled tunes and stared, silently, at the horizon. Occasionally Kevin tapped me and asked if I was doing ok. I just nodded. I was doing ok. I was!
After 5 hours we arrived at our destination. I do think it was a bit tamer that our wild hair-pin-bend journey to Lima where I learnt my above mentioned life lessons.
We caught a cab to our hostel, dumped our stuff and headed out to get some food and explore. We soon realized that there was even less English here that the previous places we had visited. Lots of hand gestures, guessing at menu items and laughing to ourselves, we ordered lunch. We ordered "Pollo empanadas" which we thought were Chicken Empanadas... logical guess, right? To our surprise we received a price of chicken covered in breadcrumbs and deep friend, KFC-style. Oh well, still delicious!
We then made our way to the old town which has a Spanish colonial layout. I felt quite confused walking around seeing all the red tile roofs, cobblestone streets and wrought iron balconies and have to remind myself that we are indeed still in Mexico.
We didn't stay out too late and, for the first time in Mexico, didn't sweat buckets and actually felt a bit on the cold side in the evening - a welcome change. I think we will enjoy being in the mountains for a few days.
