On Friday, 3 July we woke up early and took a Metro and then local bus to Teotihuacan which is 48km N.E of Mexico City. It is a famous site of many of the most architecturally significant Mesoamerican pyramids built in the pre-Columbian Americas. As you know I am not really interested in history, a couple interesting facts here or there are fine but spending a whole day in the heat looking at pyramids that pretty much look the same - not my idea of fun! I usually have to get lured with the promise of ice cream and an afternoon nap. And maybe some chocolate... ;)
This place was quite interesting but what almost pushed me over the edge on the day was that clearly it is a site that all school kids in Mexico City must visit (and the Friday we were there was Field Trip Day For Everyone) and Gringos.... everywhere! Ok hold on, let me rephrase that - Gringos with selfie sticks everywhere. Oh my goodness, how many selfies do you really need to take pulling your duck face? Flip!
We walked to the various pyramids, climbed up the gazillion stairs... and panted at the top. The view at the top was impressive and even more so when we overheard a tour guide say to his group that only 8% has been excavated. If you want more info than that, you're going to have to ask Kevin.
As promised, I got my ice cream on the way home. We went home for a siesta and then later that night went out for dinner and to watch the famous Mariachi bands.
