I left Mexico City with a heavy heart and spent most of the bus journey to San Miguel saying to Kevin "I had the best time in Mexico City... I wish we could stay longer." I figured we had reached the high point of our trip and that every other place we visited after it would pale in comparison.

How I was wrong.

We arrived in San Miguel and felt like we had stepped into a fairy tale - it is an UNESCO Heritage Site complete with cobble stone streets, a beautiful church, a pretty plaza lined with shaped trees and - possibly the best part - icecream sellers EVERYWHERE. Like on every corner! We were used to seeing shops selling paletas (popsicles) all over the place but this was something different. On closer inspection we saw that these roadside sellers had wooden barrels filled with ice and in them stainless steel containers of handmade icecream. The flavours were written up on a card but there were at least 10, if not 20, at each store. 15 pesos (R12/ $1) for one scoop or 20 pesos (R16/ $1.20) for two scoops. Yes!

I remember Denmark being ranked as the Number 1 Happiest County In The World but, honestly, I don't think they met the people living in San Miguel. These people walk around eating ice cream all day long. They sit in their pretty plaza in the evenings, eating ice cream, looking at the beautiful church lit up like the castle at Disney World and listening to the mariachi bands playing. Did I mention that they eat ice cream here? All day long? It felt like we had stumbled upon a sweet little bubble of happiness and were welcome to join in on the fun.

Of course, nothing is really a secret anymore and very soon we started noticing the American accents around us. San Miguel has got many U.S retires living here. There are many shops, restaurants and art galleries here so it really likes it a wonderful vacation destination.

We only had two nights in San Miguel and after reading up about the foodie scene in this sweet little place I realized that we would need at least a week to visit all the places on my list. Our days were filled with wandering the streets, eating great food, sampling the ice cream and relaxing in the plaza in the evenings. San Miguel was a complete surprise and an absolute delight! Another one for your bucket list... just make sure you come hungry!
