Saturday 15th August - Whitby Abbey
Part of the bus tour took us to the top of the town opposite the side of the harbour that we are staying on over the new bridge. At the top of the hill we got off the Tour Bus and entered the shop and enter way to the Abbey. Our English Heritage cards got us in for nothing and with our audio guides we traipsed our way around the Abbey Grounds.
Whitby Abbey goes back to 657AD and was originally been settled by the Danes. The Abbey is also the Gothic splendour that inspired Bran Stoker to write the legendary tale of Dracula.
After we had been through the Abbey we walked the 100m to the church also on the top of the cliffs. This church was rather strange inside as the pews were all walled off from each other with doors to each individual set of pews, each of which only held 4-5 persons. The roof was held up by 7-8 columns that were very plain. A strange church. Outside the graveyard there were dozens of headstones that were obviously very old and almost impossible to read as the lettering and in a lot of cases the entire face of the stones were worn away by the elements.
