Happiness Is The Road
It was good that I had seen the super pit but I was glad to get out of Kalgoorlie. I hit the highway after breakfast back to Norseman, 188 kilometres. I stopped off back in Norseman to get some fuel and also to get on the internet as I didn’t think there would be a signal tonight, as it turns out I was right. As I drove back out of Norseman I hit the sign for the Eyre Highway and Adelaide which will take me across the Nullarbor Plain into South Australia. When I turned onto the Eyre Highway I just had to take a photo of the Tom Tom. As you can see the next turning is in 1198 kilometres! I certainly don’t need it for directions now but I leave it on as it tells me how far I’ve got left to drive till my destination for the day. I didn’t drive all that far along the Eyre Highway today, just 108 kilometres to the Fraser Range Station Bush Camp where I will be stopping tonight. As I started down the Eyre Highway I had butterflies in my stomach for the first time this trip. This highway is the ultimate road trip for many Aussies and I think I was excited to be driving this road and also a little bit s**tting it as it’s going to be so remote. This feeling soon lifted though when I realised that it’s probably no more scary than some of the other roads I’d already been on in WA which are fairly remote. Also there are services every 200 kilometres or less on this road and emergency phones so it’s not too bad. The drive to Fraser Range took just over an hour and traffic was very quiet. I got to Fraser Range Station about 2ish and chilled for the rest of the day with music and my Dom Joly book. This camp ground is really lovely, is family owned and is next to the families homestead. The Station covers 437,00 acres with the distance between the Northern and Southern boundaries some 160 kilometres! I had my camper backed onto the bush and whilst I was chilling I could see kangaroos skipping past in the distance and emus strutting across the bush as well. Also I was visited by the most wonderful exotic looking birds, feathered variety of course! They keep sheep on the station but I didn’t see any of them, but then the place is so vast! Just before it was beginning to go dark I saw very dark clouds in the distance and could see flashes of lightning and some forked lightning, a storm was definitely approaching. I closed all the doors of the camper when the rain started and sat the storm out. It lasted nearly 3 hours and was very exciting. There were flashes of lightning every 2 or 3 seconds , the rain was torrential and the wind was howling. The camper was rocking from side to side a bit. I just turned all the lights out and watched in awe as mother nature put on the best thunder and lightning show I have ever seen. I went over to the ablutions block later dodging in and out of puddles. What with the storm and the amazing wildlife here it has been a truly wonderful day. This is a beautiful place. I had an early night as I’ve got a lot of driving to do tomorrow. Life is a Highway and I’m gonna rock it all day long!
SPOTIFY
I have started today to listen to a play list I created on Spotify featuring all Australian and New Zealand Artists. The play list contains 608 tracks and has been compiled by me over the last year and a half involving painstaking research! It’s amazing when you start looking just how much great music comes from down under. It has always been my intention to listen to this playlist whilst crossing the Nullarbor. I began playback today starting with the only place I could start, Down Under by Men At Work!
