Happiness Is The Road
When we woke up it was nice and quiet. Lindsey and Dennis had stopped broadcasting to the camp site! After a peaceful brekky we drove through the centre of Derby to the jetty. We got our first view of the sea here since leaving Darwin although we were unable to see the Indian Ocean yet as Derby is on a huge inlet called King Sound. We were still in crocodile country as the warning sign near the jetty reminded us. We looked at the water for a while but didn't get close to the edge. After this we hit the highway for the 200 kilometres or so across to Broome. The sky was blue and Broome was red hot. We did some food shopping first and then we went to find the caravan park at Cable Beach just a short distance from the centre of Broome. We had booked ahead as we had heard that Broome was very popular and would be rammed. We checked in and found our spot. It was an absolutely huge site with space for over 500 caravans and tents and was rammed. Our spot wasn't too bad but we were crammed in with row upon row of sheep in caravans all with satellite dishes . It seemed that the whole of the south of the country had relocated to Broome to watch the TV! The facilities were horrible and dirty and as this was one of the most expensive sites we had stayed at, this was unacceptable. They did however redeem themselves slightly as they had a brilliant swimming pool. As it was so hot we spent a while at the pool cooling down. It was one of the biggest pools we have been in and was nicely designed with a waterfall flowing into it at the far end. Jay in particular really enjoyed herself in the pool. She was like a water baby and amazed herself with how well she can swim now. She has never been able to swim as well before and it was great to see her having so much fun. She was crawling, breast stroking, treading water, standing under the waterfall and generally having a splashingly good time. The other good thing was that we had the pool pretty much to ourselves for a lot of the time. As it was so hot the only way to sleep later was with our trusty fan on full blast. At least it's whirring motor drowned out the sound of approx 500 TV's brainwashing the rest of the site! We were looking forward to going to the beach and seeing the Indian Ocean tomorrow.
