Happiness Is The Road
We were woken up at just before half seven by the dulcet tones of Frank Ifield singing his classic hit 'I Remember You'!!! It was blasting out from the camp site's own PA. It was kind of like being in an episode of Hi De Hi and how I imagine a stay at Butlins must have been like! I half expected to bump into Ruth Madoc! The fan went back on in order to drown this aural assault out. On the way to the amenities later we were treated to some more country and western and on the way back to some huge relief a bit of Boney M. I think it is unacceptable to force this stuff on people especially at half seven in the morning. That is unforgivable. After a breakfast to the sounds of the worst hits of the 50's we hit the road glad to leave this weird and almost other worldly place behind. We were heading to Townsville and back to the coast but on the way we decided to have a look at a place called Ravenswood which was a forty kilometre detour from the main highway. It is a gold mining town with a population of less than two hundred. It used to be an absolutely thriving place but now it is a bit of a ghost town. There are some lovely period properties here though and it was a great place to see and worth the detour. Once we were back on the main highway it took about an hour to get to Townsville. Our first stop was a retail park where there was a JB Hi-Fi. We needed to exchange our dearly departed Sat Nav Bruce. No matter how many times we tried we could not resuscitate him. The guys at JB Hi-Fi were very good about it and exchanged our Bruce for a new model. We eagerly took him out to the camper and set him up with much excitement. Our new Sat Nav is called Mick and he is Bruce's twin brother. He sounded like Bruce only much more cheerful. We just hoped that he wasn't going to be a drinker like his brother was! Mick's first job was to get us to the caravan park we had booked into in Townsville. Although he got a bit flustered when we were turning out of the retail park car park he soon got into the swing of things and guided us successfully to the Coral Coast Tourist Park. The lady on the phone when I had booked had sounded lovely and friendly. The guy on reception wasn't. He was offhand and rude and really shouldn't be in the hospitality industry. It was the most unfriendly welcome to a caravan park there has been on this trip. He even beat the two dour faced women at the caravan park in Canberra for being miserable so it was really going some. We should have read Trip Advisor beforehand as most of the comments are about this guy such as 'Very rude manager he will make you feel like ****', 'Rude ignorant chap' and ' Main gripe was the attitude of the bloke at reception he was unfriendly unhelpful and rude'. Despite this though the caravan park was nicely laid out and the amenities were nice and clean. We chilled out for the rest of the day and strangely went to bed humming...... I remember you-ooh, you're the one who made my dreams come true, I remember too-ooh a distant bell and stars that fell like the rain out of the blue ooh ooh ooh hoo hoo hoo!!!
