Up at eh crack of dawn today and off to Waitomo, the caving capital of New Zealand! First stop for the day was the cultural centre again where we learnt the Haka! It was kinda cool but we didn't learn it properly as we didn't have time! After 15 minutes worth of lessons we had to perform to all the women on the bus whilst they performed for us! The Haka actually depicts a story of a warrior but I can't be bothered to explain it so you will either have to take my word for it or google it! Put it this way we weren't quite as intimidating as the All Blacks!
When we arrived at Waitomo we checked into the hostel and then we were wisked off to the Black Water Rafting HQ. We were booked on the 5 hour Abyss! We had to get all suited and booted in 5mm wetties which included an over coat to keep us warm, helmets, gloves and torches! Then it was off in the van to the cave!
To get into the cave we had to abseil down a 35m cravasse which was only just wide enough to fit down in places so being claustrophobic was not an option! After some brief training, which included the 'if your falling uncontrollablly then scream' rule it was down into the darkness! When we got down to the bottom it was pitch black apart from the strange glow emitted from the Glow worms!
Next it was on a zip wire flying through the cave until we suddenly came to an abrupt end. It was painful to say the least on the little fella! Then we walked, swam, jumped off waterfalls, climbed up waterfalls, crawled through half submerged holes and paddled in rubber rings through the caves all 60m or so underwater! It was really good fun!
