Alice Springs was alot more developed than I thought it was going to be. It has a population of 27,000 people. We were staying at a hostel called Haven which is a renovated Motel. It was class, swimming pool and the works! It was so hot the day we arrived, 41C, and what did Herman and German say when we got into our dorm, 'i'm going to turn off the aircon because its too loud and I can't sleep'. My goodness what a freak! I spent the night sweating so much. I think I probably lost a quater of my body fluid that night! Oh well needless to say I was extra noisy again when I woke up to catch our tour bus at 5.30!
We were booked onto an Adventure Tour 3 Day Safari to Uluru and Kings Canyon! The first day we spent most of it driving and getting to know the group! It was fun, we had an open mic session where you had to tell the other people about yourself, the usual stuff!
The drive took about 7 hours but we did have a couple of stops along the way where we had the chance to ride a camel! It was soooo painful, especially when they made it run!
In the afternoon we did a trek through the Olgas, through the gorge. The official walk was called the Valley of the Winds. The only problem was that today there was no wind. It was still and ridiculously hot! I have never felt heat like it! We were told that for a 30 min walk we would need 2 litres of water! We were given water in the bus and then we set off. The temp at Alice today was 46C. Unbearable. The walk was probably only about 1km but it took just under an hour and two girls from our group actually collapsed! The air temperature was so hot with the reflection that the water that we were drinking actually got too hot. You could have put a tea bag and some milk in the bottle and you could have had a cup of tea that was just right to drink. The tour guides were right we really did need that much water for that little walk, it was ridiculous!
Next stop was to Uluru so that we could watch the Sunset. It wasn't that great because it was a little cloudy so it didn't turn the real nice orange colour we were expecting.
When we returned back to camp we heard from the Ranger that the actual temperature with the reflection off the rocks and the stillness actually took the temperature up to 66C. Incredible that nobody else collapsed. That night we cooked up some steaks on the BBQ before jumping into our Swags and sleeping outside under the stars! It was so hot that we slept on top of our swags without a sleeping bag! The stars were amazing, like nothing I have ever seen before!
Next morning (well if you can really call it that) we had to get up at 3.45 so that we could watch the sunrise over Uluru. It was really cool because there wasn't any cloud! It was packed, it was like the whole of Alice Springs had turned up! After sunrise we did a 9.4km walk around the base of the rock in 38C heat. It was only 6.30 so it was going to be a beauty of a day! haha! The walk itself was pretty grueling due to the heat but we did the full 9.4K. When we got back to the bus we had a small rest before being taken on another trek through the cultural centre and to some rather special places around the rock! We saw some aboriginal art that was really old carved on to the rock!
We had done all of this and it was only 9.00 It was back on the bus again and we were heading back to the camp! At 10 we had lunch! My body clock was in all sorts! After lunch it was back on the bus and driving to Kings Canyon! We finally arrived and had the chance to have a swim! We had just bought a slab of beers for the lads so we emptied those into the pool and got down to work! It was so much fun!
Our tour guide was actually in training and she had passed so we grabbed her, emptied some beer over her before chucking her in the pool! She took it pretty well!
Our camp was literally right in the middle of nowhere, it was so cool! We sank the rest of the beers before settling down for a real outback dinner over a camp fire! Epic Stuff! We slept under the stars again that night but weren't allowed to leave anything out because the dingos would have stolen it! For some reason that didn't worry me! During the night there was a sand storm, everyone apart from the lads went inside but we braved it! It was actually quite cooling, althought I woke up with an orange vest (which was black) and orange hair! So funny!
The last day of the tour we took a trek through Kings Canyon, and guess what time we woke up? yes you guessed it...4AM again!! I am really starting to get tired! I have had about 6 hours sleep since the neighbours night! Shocking!
The Canyon was really impressive and we did a 7km walk along the rim! got some really nice photos!
After the walk it was back to the campsite for lunch where we had the chance for a swim and then it was back on the bus to Alice! On the trip back we had a game called the Battle of the Sexs! We had to ask 10 questions to the opposite team and whichever team lost had to do a forfeit which we had to decide! Our questions were ridiculously vague with some real toughies like ...'how many parishes are there in Guernsey'. Obviously only myself and Ian knew the answer! The girls didn't really seem to get the game and we actually got some questions right! They got none! So they had to do the forfeit! We had to dress them up with the clothes that we wanted them to wear and also apply all of their makeup. It was awesome, they looked horrendous! hahaha that'll teach them!
That night we went out with the whole group. We had dressed the girls in some ridiculous looking clothes with signs like 'Easy' '$5 Tour' and other obscenities! We gave them all ridiculous makeup jobs and applied mascara to between the eye brows giving them all mono brows! It looked funny as! We had a meal at Annies and then went to Bojangals! it was a class night with everyone having a good time! Even the girls had a good time once they got over the fact that everyone was staring at them!
Good times!
