Leaving Lake Mahunapia we were on the road again, admitdly feeling a little rough heading towards Franz Josef home of the famous glacier but first we had a stop for breakfast at a place called the Bushmans Cafe.
It was quite a strange little place to say the least. Firstly you could order a Possum Pie (why i'll never know) and secondly the guy that owned it was clearly crazy! Do you know why he was crazy, i'll tell ya! He used to catch deer using Helictopter. On the outset that doesn't sound very strange but its his methods of capturing then that probably turned him into a fruit loop. He used to hurl himself out of the helicopter (obviously he wasn't the pilot) and try and land on the back of them and he would wrestle them to the ground.
Back on the road again we headed up the Glacier Highway past mountains on one side and beautiful blue seas on the other! When we finally arrived we organised a game of paintball between us! It was super fun and it actually really hurt when you got hit so the adrenaline was flowing!
There were certain rules that not everyone abided to. Take the 10m rule for example! Fairly self explanatory, no shooting from such a short distance! I was shot within 2 minutes of stepping into the jungle by Lisa (Irish so that explains it) in the chest from pretty much point blank range! Needless to say I went down! After that I was a bit weary of her and everyone else for that matter!
I did break the rule on one occasion but you can hardly blame me! I turned the corner, passed a couple of trees and then came face to face with Pete, a 6ft 5 Texan. Needless to say we were both shocked and within the 10m range! Several seconds passed but seemed like an eternity! The last thing I wanted to do was to get shot again at such close range! The red mist came down and I just shot him, dead centre in the chest! He starting shouting words that I do not wish to repeat and I cannot bring myself to type but I couldn't hear because I was coming into realisation about what I had just done and was running for my life! The last words I heard him shout was, 'NEXT TIME I SEE YOU....' and then it faded off! Thankfully he didn't realise it was me as we were all geared up so you couldn't actually work out who people were! I didn't own up till later on in the bar. Oh the life of a coward!
Next day in Franz Josef we had a sleep in which was a rarity on this part of our trip! Myself and Ian had opted for the helicopter flight on to the glacier! The views from the air were amazing to say the least and when we got onto the ground it was even better! We hiked through ice tunnels, over streams, around massive ice structures, around ravines and even through the smallest ice hole I have ever seen! It was so scary I thought I was stuck halfway through! It didn't do my claustrophobia any good when the guide said that it could collapse at any point! Oh well I survived!
