Ian & Claire's Adventure
We set off for the outback. The rainforest and rain was left for a dry, arid, red earthed landscape with termite mounds all over. The road soon lost its asphalt and we were soon worried for the van. The drive was really cool, a true outback Australia. As we approached Chillagoe and the sun lowered Claire spotted a number of Wallabies by the road. It was really exciting to see them so early on into our trip, just what we had hoped for. We arrived in Chillagoe, a proper dusty one horse town and chose to stay at the eco campsite. We were the only ones there. There were bats everywhere (big flying foxes). Claire went to the toilet and was met by a bright green frog sitting on the seat. It then jumped into the bowl (of the only toilet). When she explained this to the owner she thought we were really fussy not wanting to go with a pet frog under the rim. Later an owl landed in the tree next to us while we cooked next to the van.
In just a couple of days we have gone from 140km outside the barrier reef, diving with sharks and turtles, to a tropical rainforest in north Queensland, to 145 km into a true Aussie Outback. That's so cool.
