Ian & Claire's Adventure
We caught the ferry to Frazer, it was overcast and drizzly. We met Ranger Phil and started our tour. We started on the west coast and drove East throught he native bush. A fairly large carpet Python slithered across the road on the way. Our first stop was McKensie lake, a beautiful lake with white sand and blue waters (ap[parently with lots of minerals and high acid content so great for the skin). We went for a dip, which was lovely but unfortunately rained a bit at the end. We spotted a lace monitor walking across the beach, about a metre long. We went back to the bus for tea and muffins. The roads were very bumpy, for 4X4s only. Phil talked us through the fauna and flora of the island. We stopped at central station, a rainforest area with large Kauri trees and palms and ferns which we took a short walk through. After stopping for a buffet lunch at one of the resorts, we headed to the 74Km beach, a highway just like 95mile beach in NZ. We were told not to swim in the sea, duwe to the sharks by the beach, bronze whalers, hammerheads, tiger sharks and all the big boys. We stopped at the Maheno wreck, a huge old ocean liner that was washed ashore in 1935 by a cyclone, it just sits on the beach covered in rust. We drove on and saw a Dingo strolling down the beach which was very exciting. The last stop on the east shore was to sea the pinnacles, a group of coloured sand cliffs, really nice colours, golden orangy yellow. We headed back down the beach again to Eli Creek, a fast flowing creek out to the sea. We jumped in , as the weather was now glorious, and walked up the creek and goit washed back down again. On the way back to the boat we stopped at a really pretty sandblow, which are massive sand dunes which travel across the island, engulfing forests. All good fun, an amazing island its now a world heritage site but once a logging supply. We grabbed fish & chips and headed out to the cinema to see Oceans 12.
