Still driving west and south we popped (80kms) into Onslow, another small port town with a salt mine and gas plant. The road in was straight and flat and on either side of the road were hundreds and hundreds of huge red termite mounds that stretched for kilometres off into the distance. We had lunch and a walk around the small town then drove back out of town about 40 Km's to camp along the Ashburton river. It was a beautiful and peaceful spot to stay for a few nights. The boys spent the mornings fishing and we got some more beach time too, plus quite a bit of relaxing! The beach here was strange with very brown sand, not light brown but really dark brown, like chocolate or mud but it was actually sand not dirt, so weird!! I even got creative and made some wind chimes with the shells we collected at 80 mile beach. We also enjoyed the company of the couple camped next door, sharing tea and scones and stories.
