We left 80 mile beach and drove a few hours west and slightly south to Port Hedland where we had lunch at the river mouth and were in time to watch a big ship come in to be loaded. It was an interesting place to see lots of industry including a salt mine and iron ore mines. After a grocery shop we set off again, another 3 hours to a small village on the coast near Karratha, called Point Samson. Unfortunately we had cool, windy weather while we were there but it was good weather to explore Karratha (and nearby Dampier) another port town built to service the huge amount of industry in the surrounding area. There are iron ore mines, salt mines and on and off shore gas plants. The huge gas plant was an incredible sight to see. So too were the countless residential areas in which every second house had a boat in the driveway!! Karratha is where my brother flys in and out of from Perth. On our last day in Point Samson we did get a sunny afternoon out of the wind at a little bay/beach to fish and swim. We left point Samson and did another grocery shop in Karratha before heading further west down the road to Fortesque River Mouth, which is a free camp very close to my brothers mine. We set up camp and my brother came to stay with us for the evening. It was wonderful to see him and catch up. We look very forward to seeing he and his wife in Perth in a months time.
