We left Home Valley on the 25th and turned off the Gibb onto the Kalumburu Rd and stopped for the night at a free camp by the Gibb River. It was a lovely spot where the boys could play on the sandy banks and swim. However, we were so hesitant to swim at first, as wherever we have been in the past month or so has been riddled with Saltys. Even though all the reports on WikiCamps said it was safe to swim and there were no signs to say we couldn't we have been so well drilled about crocs we were nervous! As Jack was about to take the first plunge he said "If a croc gets me you're not allowed to have my money, it has to go to charity". When we said that was thoughtful of him, which charity would it be, he replied, "Crocodile Awareness!" And leapt in laughing! Obviously it all was well and was safe to swim. We spent a lovely night around a campfire. The next morning we hit the dirt again and had 60kms of corrugated road to contend with. Not fun. We got to Drysdale River Station and had a chat to a few people about the state of the road up to King Edward Campground and consequently Mitchell Falls. Unfortunately it was another 100kms of the same corrugations which we weren't keen to take the van or car on. However, we decided to take a 2 hr scenic plane flight out to the Falls instead, which we did the next morning at sunrise. We were so glad we did, because not only did we get to see the full wonder of Mitchell Falls and the Mitchell Plateau but we saw some of the most spectacular scenery along the way, including Mount Trafalgar, the coast and the sheer expanse of the land. Needless to say the boys enjoyed it. After the flight we left Drysdale and headed towards Mt Elizabeth Station but decided to push on further and pulled up stumps at a free camp at Barnett River Gorge. We literally jumped out of the car and without setting up took off to walk up to the gorge while we still had some light. It was so beautiful and we had it to ourselves. We got back just on dusk and set up then.
