We left Broome vowing to return one day. We drove out of town but turned north to travel up Cape Leveque road. It was the strangest road we have travelled so far. It was bright red dirt/sand and graded so much that the road was bowl shaped. It was quite corrugated in parts and rough. As we drove on, some sections of the road were bowl shaped then others became as narrow as one lane and deep, so that the sides of the road became red walls. Then in other places the road became about 4 lanes wide and flat! Whatever shape the road took it remained quite rough and busy with traffic coming in and out so it was a slower, longer trip than expected. We turned west off Cape Leveque road and got to Middle Lagoon about lunchtime. After a quick lunch and set up we wandered down to the closest little beach/bay and realised we'd arrived in paradise! We spent the next 4 days in a lazy blur of white sand, sea and blue sky; snorkelling, swimming, fishing and collecting beautiful shells along the shore. The camping ground isn't huge so the beaches feel empty, as if we almost have them to ourselves. On one of the days the bigger boys all went up to Kooljaman/Cape Leveque for the day to take a tour with a local Aboriginal man, Brian, who took them fishing and crabbing in an exclusive area, reserved for that tour. They had a lot of fun and bought home a lovely feed of Mangove Jack but also caught an Estuary Cod, a small barracuda and mud crab. The next day they spent more time fishing in the "creek" at the end of the beach, practicing the techniques Brian had taught them, and caught some estuary cod for us. We had a magical four days here, wishing it was longer.
