The drive to the Bungles from Kununurra was about 300km with the last 53km expected to be challenging. The track into the Bungles was in good condition & the water crossings had a firm bottom - but care was required. After registering etc at the Visitor Centre we set up camp in the northern campground (Kurrajong) & planned our activities for the morrow.
Early to bed (no fire) means early to rise - about 6am so an early start was made. First we walked to the Mini Palm Gorge. One of the best walks I have done. Not long being only 5km return but it required following a windy path that presented amazing views at every turn. The path was just difficult enough to keep you focused. Then onto Echidna Chasm which involves walking between 2 towering walls of rock more than 200m high on a path maybe 4 foot wide! Makes you realise how insignificant man is!
True to form I developed a doozie of a headache, didn't sleep & felt wretched next morning. Decided to rest up & do the walk to the Domes & Cathedral Gorge in the late afternoon. Steve & Yvonne headed off & I sought shade in the dry watercourse near our camp. Left camp about 3pm & even with the 40km drive, thought I'd have good light during the walk. The whole area was in deep shadow with a little sun on the tops of the domes. Almost ran around the 'dome walk' before heading into Cathedral Gorge. Equally impressive as the Mini Palms walk & the amphitheatre created at the end is incredible. Retracing my steps I then checked out Picaninny Creek & the Lookout. It was almost too dark to see where your feet were landing & was thinking about turning back but finally got there - just in time to see nightfall! It's a scary place in the dark - everything looks the same. Was thinking a new reality show would work where they send intrepid celebs into the Bungles maze & eat those who don't find their way out!
Back to Kununurra tomorrow. The Bungles were more impressive than I expected because there is lots of other good stuff besides the Domes. It just so hard doing them justice with the camera!
