FARFRUMWURKEN
We woke to the sounds of bells that were coming from the local church just behind the Casa. It looked to be another fantastic day in the Yucatan - 32F degrees, sunny and hot but with the great breeze that always seems to be around.
We've been told by some of the locals that we just had to go to one of the main north/south streets in Merida known as Paseo Montejo. Sunday is a family day here, they close the northern section of the 6-lane street and families turn out with their bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, dogs and cameras. The place is full of nothing but Dogs, Bikes & Kiddies.
With it being one of the major thoroughfares in Merida, it's tree-lined with mature trees that cover the sidewalks and provide ample shade to shield that never-ending sunshine. We've continued to use UBER with amazing success. One of the locals told us that he doesn't rent cars for his local city use because you become a little bit of a target for both police and scammers - at $2.00US to go virtually anywhere in the city how can you do otherwise. We dropped by a bakery/pastry shop on Paseo and we had a brief discussion with the owners kids who were born in Steveston, can you believe it.
Some of the bikes that traveled up and down Montejo were custom-built. It was weird to see seven, yes seven people rolling down the Paseo on ONE bike - and there was just not one of these, bike after bike that passed us carried the whole family. Before coming back to the Casa we timed our walk to end at Wal-Mart for some additional groceries that we were unable to get at Costco. We ended up talking at length with an expat, Bill who had immigrated to Mexico from Vancouver some six years ago. There doesn't seem to be anyone with any negatives to Merida.
I've attached some pictures of the many mansions that line the Paseo, it certainly is impressive, but I guess that's only MY point of view. Enjoy a pretty cool part of the Yucatan and we'll update things again tomorrow.
