FARFRUMWURKEN
We decided that today we'd head out to Progreso to kick some waves in the ocean. We've been in Merida for about 18 days but we've never made it to this Yucatan port some 45 minutes away by bus. I talked Deb into traveling with the locals to Progreso. So we tracked down where we would pick up the local bus for our 30 kilometer trip. The cost of the bus ride is $20P or $1.00US and it was definitely not the same level of service as our ADO bus trip from Cancun. Our first thought of Progreso was that it was a little dirty and maybe a little touristy. Definitely not the same feel as we had in Merida. But if you were so inclined to jump in the ocean, you can certainly do that. Today there were some pretty strong off-shore winds so there was quite a bit of wake hitting the shore - again not the same feel as I had in Cancun. We stopped for lunch at one of the many restaurants that lined the beach. Not real hungry so we thought a Caesar salad for two, some pappas (french fries) and a couple Coca Light con hielo. When the salads arrived - wow - they were four full stalks of Romaine covered in cheese, sauce and pollo (chicken). We've never ever seen such large salads before. Not being able to finish, we walked the beach, took some shots and then thought we'd head back to Merida before dark. This is a holiday weekend, Monday is a holiday - not quite sure what it's a holiday for (Hot of the press - it's Benito Juarez Day, a Mexican hero) but it seems like it's party central downtown in the main square - stages set up on all corners, families walking and little kids chasing the hundreds and hundreds of pigeons that dart in and out of the square. It was a nice day today but I think I'll still take Merida over Progreso. Enjoy the shots.

Catherine Gonzales Bob, I love that you are writing in Spanish. Bu "Jelo" is spelled "hielo." Monday is Benito Juarez Day.
