FARFRUMWURKEN
We’ll we were able to get off at Stanley today.
The waters are calm and the sun is actually breaking through some of the
clouds, apparently a pretty rare day from what they say as only 4 of the last
10 cruise ship attempts have been successful.
We were first tender off – and with only 1,200 inhabitants we didn’t really feel
that this was going to be jam packed with things to see. Pretty basic town, I guess 32
years ago, back in 1982 when the English and Argentinean’s were duking in the
bay, there was probably a lot more action that there is now. Deb and I walked the streets, seemed every driveway had a Land Rover parked there, of one year or another, albeit I
did see some Austin Mini’s driving around – apparently they just don’t get too
much snow here.
We visited the southern most cathedral in the world, dropped in to some of the
local gift shops and pub but there wasn’t much to tweak our interest so a few photos
later we jumped back on the tender and had lunch and watched a storm roll into
town.
We’ve been at sea for two days heading to Montevideo, Uruguay – the temperature seems
to rise with every few miles traveled.
We had our Dancing with the Stars competition today and our tour partner
Doreen from Alliston, Ontario won the whole competition with here Cha Cha. She did a great job for a gal of 81but, all the neon signs (which we took down to their stateroom and taped them
all across their doorway), plus some forty something voices to yell and whistle
on the voice meter seemed to help just a little bit too.
We’ve been warned about keeping our wits about us while visiting Montevideo tomorrow
– “dress down”, they’ve told us – “no jewelry” – “no expensive cameras” –
“watch out for this scam and that scam”. After tomorrow we’ve got just one day left on the boat before we get off on the 10th. The “future cruise desk” here onboard ship has been busy pretty much every hour of ever day since we left Vancouver – apparently the hot cruise right now is the
85-day Africa cruise – does nobody work anymore.?
It’s also our last cash poker game at 9:00 p.m tonight. I pretty much played each and every day (except when in port) with these nine other guys, so we’ve all got to know each other pretty
good and are starting to know each other’s tells.
All good things must come to an end. I
think we’re done. We’re ready to get off – the food seems pretty regular now. Both Deb and I caught the flu, yes again – but now two days into it and with the help of some medications we seem to be on the mend again. Some people just have no class when they show up to the theatre or play cards in the casino and hack away spreading germs all throughout the ship. Jamie knows what I’m like – on the last cruise she called me a “germaphobe”. I’ve actually been
wearing a mask at the poker table just to keep my germs to myself.
We’re pretty excited about checking out BA – our apartment looks great – right in the
heart of the Recolletta District so we’ll have lots of things to see and I
can’t wait to get my teeth into some of the different Asasdo (Meat) Restaurants
that are everywhere, all over town. Hopefully some good wi-fi as well so that I can get back on track.
Thanks for letting me ramble on. More to follow from Montevideo.
