Adventures of a Global Wanderer
I was now really tired from a full day touring Nagasaki and wanted to just sit down, rest, and have a good meal. I knew there was nothing by my hotel so was figuring out where to go. I knew the tram would go by Chinatown so I figured I could go there to get a nice chinese meal. When I got there, still quite tired, I felt it might be expensive being too touristy. I decided to walk a few minutes out and see if there were cheaper places just outside Chinatown. The four compass streets in Chinatown actually continue to stretch north beyond the Chinatown gate as I suspected. I still wasnt seeing much choice for food so carried on walking. This lead me to a traffic intersection where I could see the start of a long indoor shopping arcade. I knew from previous Japanese cities they always have these and this is where restaurants and retail shopping for the locals can be found. The arcade was quite long stretching over many city blocks. The food options weren't the greatest with me not understanding the stuff and having food restrictions. Again, too tired I decided to just go inside somewhere and figure something out. The server did not speak english as I was trying to navigate the menu. There were two or three things I could make out which I could eat. The one I wanted to try was a sort of seafood pizza. But instead of a dough base, the cheese and topping are on a rice base, so more of an asian twist The meal was 898Y ($11.25). It was nice but not as filling a meal as I needed after a full day exploring. Only when I left having now being somewhat energized did I realize there was a narrow outdoor food street running parallel to the indoor shopping arcade. I had just spent $11 on a meal so wasnt willing to spend another $10 on food. I wondered around a bit at night exploring before heading back to the tram stop Many of the food vendors had come to life at night. I also found one of those Japanese pancake places which I had wanted to try and probably would have been more filling but I didnt pass this way before I then took the tram back to the hotel to shower, rest, and watch some evening tv My full day exploring Nagasaki was very enjoyable and more than I expected. I had no idea about the history and heritage and you need 2-3 days to explore it proper. The Dutch, Chinese, British, and Portuguese had all been here and left their influence. There is also a history of how the Christians were persecuted, restricted, had Churches destroyed. I wanted to visit a site of the Christian Martyrs but it was the other side of the city and too out of the way as I was trying to go where most of the places were. There were other chinese and large temples I wanted to see but again they were out of the way and closed at 5pm. It was a nice balance of 1930s style trams with many period colonial features in Dejima, Hollander Slope, and Glover Park. Add into that Chinatown and the Golden Gate Bridge style harbour crossing, Nagasaki can almost be considered Japan's San Francisco Tomorrow would be a full day exploring a giant Dutch theme park complete with a town square and Royal Palace, and another ancient historic settlement
