Adventures of a Global Wanderer
Close to the European settlement homes on Hollander Slope the next stop walking distance was to the Chinese Confucian Academy. I've seen many of these before in Korea and China and was quite surprised at the entrance price of 600Y ($7.25). I was hoping it would be worth it and I was turned out quite amazing so well worth the entry price. The first outer gate is typical chinese style and reminiscent of the brightly coloured and decorated temples they had in Taiwan. There was a small outer pond and bridge from which to take photos of the main gate. This led inside to the main courtyard. I was amazed by the sight as it was unlike the so many temples I have visited across asia. There were double rows of terra cotta style lifesize warriors facing each other on either side of the courtyard. The figures were carved white and a truly remarkable sight. Inside the temple was typical with a shrine inside. I didnt realize till I was leaving that there was a rear shrine to lead to another building. Walking back thru the rows of statues taking pictures there was a building at the back with an entrance. It led to a chinese heritage gift shop and there were stairs leading up I followed the stairs and stumbled onto a chinese heritage museum. It was very interesting with decorated ceramics and other carvings. I was quite surprised how relaxed it was and that I could take pictures of everything as normally its not allowed. When I completed the circuit I realized I had come in from the gift shop at the back and worked my way backwards to the entrance. Here was a sign and attendent saying no photography but I had already photographed the whole museum.
