From the Peace Park I now wanted to goto Miyajima Island. This is one of the most famous sites in Japan. There were two options. Go back to Hiroshima Station and use my train pass to get there in 30 mins. Or take a tram from the Peace Park for one hour. I decided to take the tram since I was already at the tram stop rather than going back to the main train station to get the direct train. Also the tram may be more scenic. It seemed to go very slow at first grinding thru traffic. There are about 30 stops to the end which is where the ferry to Miyajima Island was. However after about a dozen stops it becomes a light rail in its own rail track away from traffic so moves quite fast at its own speed. Beside is the ferry terminal and the choice of two ferries. There is a large nicer ferry which you have to buy a ticket for. Or a simple car ferry which is run by JR and included in my rail pass so would be free. I took the car ferry since it was free and just about to leave. The ferry ride was interesting as he steers first straight directly towards the floating torii before heading sideways to the port. Also the clouds were quite thick as a storm was expected to hit but I had made it this far with most of the day complete with no rain. The ferry is about 15 mins and I reached the other side hoping to time it for the sunset but the weather was bad today. Entrance to the shrine cost 300Y ($4) and they said it was closing at 6pm so I only had about 30 mins to explore. The shrine was painted orange but not well lit as the sun was setting. It was oriented towards the sea with the floating torii in the centre. After coming out the other side of the shrine I came back thru the small touristy town. By the ferry port it had some small upscale hotels but strangely everything shuts down about 6pm and doesnt cater to the evening crowd. There was a five storied pagada and some wild deer strolling around. I was waiting for the lights to come on but it appears the torii was not going to be lit. Strangely a tour boat came and rode thru the inside and provided the only lighting. I returned back to the ferry as it was another hour tram ride and I still had to find where my evenings accomodation was. After the ferry left the port the lights had now come on at the torii. It was too far and difficult to take zoom pics from a moving vessel. I had completed my itinerary for the day with no sign yet of the major storm which was expected to hit.
